How to protect your family from colds and flu this Winter

Winter is here, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help keep my family healthy during flu season.
1. Avoid sugar. Excessive sugar consumption can impair the function of our white blood cells (WBC)- the soldiers meant to provide protection against germs. I choose healthy sweet treat alternatives for my family, including raw honey, dates, and using baked apples to naturally sweeten baked goods. We AVOID sugar as a rule, hidden sugars and added sugars are everywhere, so I read the labels and choose home made and unprocessed as a rule.
2. Get enough sleep. Especially during the winter months, we need more rest. Lack of sleep can suppress your immune system. During the winter months, our bed time routine starts as the sun sets. We have dinner, bath, reading time and then lights off almost 1 hour earlier than summer months. I also get our lunch boxes ready and have breakfast partially made the night before, so we can sleep in a little. We get up about half an hour later in the mornings during winter.
3. Get some sun. During winter it is more important than ever to get out in the sun and get some rays on your bare skin. We love hiking followed by a picnic, so we bask in the sun and get some much need Vitamin D (which boosts your immune system).
4. Immune booosting vitamins, A, C, E, Zinc and Selenium. Although I believe food is medicine, unfortunately the nutritional value of food is often less than optimal and that means that we are not getting all the vitamins and minerals we need. When we supplement, it is food based supplements.
5. Eat the rainbow. Winter is the perfect time for a large fruit salad with the entire color spectrum as well as nourishing vegetable soups. I grate everything my kids might not want in there (eg cauliflower and baby marrow) and keep the veggies they love in chunks. Win win . I also love warm salads with root vegetables, pesto and quinoa or brown rice.
